A tragic accident occurred at Idimu, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, when a commercial bus collided with a street light pole. A yet-to-be-identified male adult lost his life in the crash, while two other passengers sustained varying degrees of injury.
The incident took place as the bus was en route to Iyana Ipaja. According to an eyewitness, Wasiu, the bus was speeding just a few meters away from the Idimu bus-stop when it suddenly lost control and crashed into the pole situated on the median. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to assist the injured individuals, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
This tragic incident underscores the need for better traffic enforcement and road safety measures in Lagos, particularly in areas with high traffic congestion.
The tragic accident occurred early in the morning at Alhaja bus-stop, just a few meters from Idimu, around 4 a.m. Eyewitness Wasiu explained that the bus was speeding and the driver, possibly unaware of a sharp bend at Alhaja, lost control while attempting to navigate it. The bus then collided with a pole on the median, causing the impact to throw one passenger, sitting beside the driver, out of the bus. Tragically, this passenger hit his head on the ground and died instantly.
Another eyewitness, Demola Raji, confirmed that two other passengers, including the driver, were seriously injured. Raji recounted how they managed to pull the injured individuals from the vehicle and rushed them to the hospital for treatment. The condition of the injured passengers remains unclear.
This incident highlights the dangers posed by speeding and the lack of awareness of road conditions, particularly in high-traffic areas like Alimosho.
Residents of the area have expressed ongoing concerns about the recurring accidents at the spot, which they attribute to the sharp bend. Funmlola, a local resident, shared her frustration, saying that many motorists unfamiliar with the bend have been involved in accidents. She revealed that the community had once considered contacting the government to address the issue but ultimately realized that the only solution was for drivers to exercise greater caution when navigating the route.
The residents’ comments highlight a broader issue of road safety, especially in areas where traffic hazards like sharp bends are not clearly marked or adequately addressed. There is a growing call for better road infrastructure and measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
The tragic incidents on Saturday also saw a pedestrian lose his life in the Ojota area of Lagos State. According to Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the pedestrian was attempting to cross the expressway at the Ojota bus stop when he was struck by a truck. The pedestrian was reportedly violating the use of the pedestrian bridge when the accident occurred.
Meanwhile, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed another fatal accident on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway, also claiming a life. These incidents highlight the persistent road safety concerns and the dangers of pedestrian violations and speeding on major highways.#newsafro_
