Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has announced his intention to seek re-election in March 2025. This decision follows widespread endorsements from various CAF Member Association Presidents and Zonal Union Presidents. Motsepe, who was first elected on March 12, 2021, in Rabat, Morocco, made his re-election bid public on Friday after months of speculation regarding his future.
In his current tenure, Motsepe has overseen significant financial improvements within CAF’s operations, as highlighted in reports from the recent 46th CAF Ordinary Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Patrice Motsepe faces potential competition for the CAF presidency from Hany Abo Rida, a member of FIFA’s council and candidate from the Egyptian Football Association (EFA). Abo Rida has garnered significant support from his federation, with EFA member Ehab El-Komy praising his capabilities and influence in football. El-Komy stated that Abo Rida is a strong candidate, noting his value in the sport and suggesting that anyone looking to engage with FIFA’s Gianni Infantino should first approach Abo Rida.
Motsepe’s re-election bid will be closely watched, especially with Abo Rida’s emergence as a formidable challenger.
