The British Council, acting through its duly authorized representatives, has reaffirmed and restated its institutional commitment to the enhancement of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s creative and educational ecosystems. Said commitment shall be executed through the establishment of long-term partnerships, the implementation of capacity-building initiatives specifically tailored to creative practitioners and educators, and the provision of support programs targeted at youth engagement and professional development.
This undertaking was formally declared during the Creative Economy Week 2025, convened in Lagos, which assembled a consortium of stakeholders comprising creative professionals, cultural organizations, industry leaders, policymakers, private sector participants, and investors, for the purpose of advancing strategic dialogue on skills development and sectoral growth within Nigeria’s creative economy.
In her official address, Ms. Andona McConnell, Country Director of the British Council in Nigeria, emphasized the Council’s collaborative approach, rooted in multi-level engagement with governmental authorities, academic institutions, and community-based actors. Ms. McConnell further reiterated that the Council’s mandate is to generate sustainable socio-economic impact, particularly by leveraging international platforms to amplify Nigerian creative talent and by strengthening the educational infrastructure through teacher training and leadership development.
Through initiatives such as the Creative Showcase Programme and international collaborations exemplified by Africa Fashion Week London, the British Council has undertaken to facilitate cultural exchange, professional networking, and global exposure for Nigerian creatives. Simultaneously, its education-focused programmes continue to prioritize the professional advancement of educators, with the stated objective of producing measurable improvements in student learning outcomes across the country.
Accordingly, the British Council’s dual emphasis on creativity and education is positioned as both a means of empowering Nigerian youth and as a foundation for the attainment of sustainable national economic development. The reaffirmation of this pledge, as recorded during the aforesaid convening, reflects the Council’s long-standing commitment to fostering cross-border cultural and educational partnerships that enhance capacity, drive innovation, and strengthen institutional resilience in Nigeria.#newsafro_
