Nigerian recording artist Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy, has formally clarified the extent of the influence exerted by the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, upon his professional career. In a recorded interview with international tennis icon Roger Federer, published under Complex’s “GOAT Talk” series, Burna Boy affirmed that while Fela’s extensive body of work significantly shaped his cultural environment and personal appreciation of music during his formative years, such exposure did not constitute direct inspiration for his own artistic compositions.
During the discourse, when questioned by Federer regarding the albums he considered to be the “greatest of all time,” Burna Boy referenced a range of works spanning diverse genres and eras, including Joe’s My Name Is Joe, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, 2Pac’s Makaveli, and, without exception, the entire discography of Fela Kuti. Notwithstanding this acknowledgment, Burna Boy expressly stated: “Honestly, none. I promise you. But Fela was a big influence on me,” thereby distinguishing between cultural influence and creative inspiration.
The artist further elaborated that his earliest exposure to recorded music included Joe’s album, gifted to him on his 10th birthday, alongside the complete collection of Fela’s albums inherited from his grandfather. He described each Fela release as a “GOAT album” but reiterated that his personal musical direction was independently developed.
Burna Boy additionally revealed ancillary aspects of his upbringing, including: (i) his father’s affinity for Queen and Freddie Mercury; (ii) his own childhood creation of a comic-book persona, “Burna Boy,” which ultimately became his stage name; (iii) his family’s long-standing tradition of celebrating Christmas as a period for unity and reconnection; and (iv) his nostalgic recollection of childhood meals, specifically fried yam with assorted meats.
By distinguishing Fela Kuti’s formative role in his environment from direct inspiration for his artistry, Burna Boy’s statement underscores that his musical trajectory has been guided primarily by his personal vision, lived experiences, and a diverse range of global and local influences.#newsafro_
