Justin Berfield is reflecting on an unexpected return to the spotlight after spending two decades away from acting.Best known for playing Reese in the hit series Malcolm in the Middle, Berfield, now 40, has reprised his role in a new four-part revival titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, which brings back original cast members including Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Frankie Muniz, and Christopher Masterson.
In a recent interview, Berfield opened up about why he stepped away from Hollywood at the height of his early success. He explained that he had been acting since childhood and spent much of his youth constantly on set, which eventually made him crave a different kind of life.
After the original series ended, he explored life behind the camera as a producer, worked on various projects, traveled, and eventually settled into family life. Over time, acting faded into the background as he focused on raising his children with his wife, Liza Almeida.
Berfield said that what was meant to be a short break gradually turned into 20 years, as marriage, fatherhood, and everyday life took priority. During that time, he largely stayed out of the public eye, embracing a quieter routine centered on his family.
Now returning to set for the revival, he described the experience as surprisingly relaxed, saying he felt little pressure stepping back in front of the camera. With familiar faces around him and the original creative team involved, he said it felt natural to slip back into the role of Reese.
For Berfield, the return wasn’t about reclaiming fame—it was about enjoying a moment he never expected to revisit, while balancing it with the very different life he built away from Hollywood.#newsafro_
