Ghanaian musical duo DopeNation, composed of identical twin brothers Michael Boafo (B2) and Tony Boafo (Twist), has publicly expressed the position that while record labels can provide significant advantages to recording artists, they are not universally suitable for all performers. According to the duo, record labels may offer financial support, marketing assistance, and exposure to wider audiences, but these benefits are contingent upon the artist’s understanding of contractual obligations and readiness to comply with the label’s requirements.
DopeNation, formerly signed to Lynx Entertainment but currently operating independently, emphasized that record label agreements involve specific obligations, including adherence to deadlines, creative directives, and profit-sharing arrangements. The duo stated that prospective signees must fully understand these commitments prior to entering into contracts.
In addition, DopeNation described their approach to sustaining relevance in the music industry, noting that continuous adaptation to evolving musical trends, techniques, and styles is essential. They further explained that their contrasting creative perspectives serve as an asset, facilitating innovation and enhancing the quality of their output.
The duo noted that despite producing some of Ghana’s most successful musical works, music groups have been overlooked at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards over the past four years due to a lack of nominations, which has diminished public recognition of their contributions.
Finally, DopeNation indicated that, if given the opportunity to influence the music industry, they would prioritize support for music producers, recognizing them as fundamental to the creation and success of musical works. They stated that strengthening the support system for producers would have a positive effect on the broader industry.
