Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has recently addressed the ongoing discourse surrounding feminism, emphasizing that the movement is not about disrespecting men. In a viral social media post, the acclaimed actress, who proudly identifies as a feminist, clarified that while she strongly supports feminist ideals, she does not advocate for women to disrespect their husbands. Her statement highlights her belief in gender equality while maintaining the importance of mutual respect in relationships.
Funke Akindele recently shared her perspective on feminism, offering valuable advice to the wife of popular social media comedian Kamo State. In her message, she expressed, “I’m a feminist, but I don’t support a woman disrespecting her husband. Make sure you do what is right.” She went on to assert that while advocating for equality, women should not undermine their husbands.
Akindele further emphasized the strength and power of women, saying, “We women are strong and bold. Our economic power is very important. That’s why we should make sure we have the power and protect the power so we can support our husbands.” She also highlighted that men should treat women with respect, and should not view them as confined to the kitchen or speak to them in a demeaning manner.
Reflecting her broader beliefs, in an interview with Nigeria’s Arise TV last year, Akindele urged women to become enterprising and self-reliant, stressing the critical importance of entrepreneurship, regardless of a woman’s circumstances.
Funke Akindele encouraged women to break free from financial dependence on men, emphasizing that success is within their reach. She challenged the notion that women cannot be financially independent, citing successful entrepreneurs like Folorunsho Alakija as prime examples. “Who says women can’t make money?” Akindele questioned, urging women to realize they don’t need to rely on a man to succeed.
She also offered practical advice to young women, urging them to focus on their own journeys rather than succumbing to envy or the pressure to live beyond their means. “Whatever you have, just start something. Move. Don’t wait for the big opportunity. Even if it’s petty business, just start something,” she advised, highlighting the importance of taking action and pursuing financial independence from the outset.#newsafro_
