Helen Worth is set to record her final scenes as Coronation Street’s character Gail this week, as the soap opera hints at her departure, surprising fans with modifications to the iconic theme tune.
Announcing her departure in June, 73-year-old Helen Worth stated: “This year seemed an ideal moment to leave the show, following the celebration of 50 remarkable years on this iconic street and in such a rewarding role. I made this decision at the beginning of the year and, upon discussing it with the producers, was met with great kindness and understanding. I have yet to fully process the reality of leaving.”
Worth’s character, Gail, first appeared on Coronation Street in 1974 and is renowned as the soap’s most frequently married female character. Among her on-screen spouses are Brian Tilsley, portrayed by Christopher Quinten, and Martin Platt, played by Sean Wilson.
A notable moment in Gail’s storyline occurred when her third husband, Richard Hillman (portrayed by Brian Capron), a serial killer, drove her into a canal—a dramatic episode viewed by over 19 million fans. In her final season, Gail experiences a new romance with a partner 18 years her junior, marking the return of Jesse Chadwick, portrayed by 55-year-old John Thomson.
Ms. Worth’s character, Gail, endured numerous hardships, including wrongful imprisonment after the drowning of her fourth husband, Joe McIntyre (portrayed by Reece Dinsdale). Her most recent marriage was to Michael Rodwell, played by Les Dennis, in 2015.
Ms. Worth’s departure comes amidst other notable changes on the set of Coronation Street. The soap’s iconic theme tune was modified last evening to incorporate the sound of a flatlining heartbeat, symbolizing Gail Platt’s recent cardiac arrest.
In scenes aired last week, Gail was hospitalized following a heart attack as Coronation Street collaborated with the British Heart Foundation to highlight the dangers of heart disease.
