Abia State Representative Alex Ikwechegh has faced backlash after a video surfaced showing him physically assaulting a driver during an altercation. In the footage, Ikwechegh, who represents the Ikwuano/Umuahia North constituency, can be heard threatening the driver, saying, “I’ll make you disappear,” while aggressively confronting him.
The incident has sparked outrage among the public and political commentators, with many calling for accountability and condemning the use of violence by elected officials. Social media users have demanded that authorities take action against Ikwechegh, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable from someone in a position of power.
As the story develops, calls for an official investigation into the incident continue to grow, with citizens urging the government to hold public officials accountable for their actions.
In a troubling display of aggression, Abia State Representative Alex Ikwechegh was recorded threatening a driver during a heated confrontation. In the footage, Ikwechegh boasts, “Do you know who I am? I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing will happen,” while disparaging the driver as a “rat.” He further declared, “I am not going to give this boy one naira of my money.”
This incident has raised significant concerns about the abuse of power and the accountability of elected officials. Public outrage has been directed at Ikwechegh for his menacing behavior, prompting demands for an official investigation and a call for repercussions against such misconduct. The public is emphasizing that threats of violence and intimidation have no place in leadership and should not be tolerated.
In a disturbing escalation of his earlier threats, Abia State Representative Alex Ikwechegh continued his aggressive tirade against the driver, saying, “I am not going to call my policemen to beat you up; I will do that myself. I will show that I am a big brother to you, tie you up, lie you down, and put you in my generator house.” He further taunted the driver, questioning, “Do you know where you are? Because you saw me sitting outside here. Look at this monkey.”
These statements highlight a blatant misuse of authority and a troubling attitude towards violence and intimidation. The shocking nature of Ikwechegh’s comments has sparked outrage among the public and calls for accountability, reinforcing the need for elected officials to act responsibly and uphold the law rather than resort to threats and coercion. The incident underscores serious concerns about the potential for abuse of power and the culture of impunity surrounding some political figures.Recall that in September 2023, the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Umuahia, Abia State capital, led by Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe, sacked Emeka Nnamani, who is a member of the Labour Party and ordered that a certificate of return be issued to Ikwechegh, a candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who came second in the 2023 general election.
Nnamani was sacked based on certificate forgery.
The Appeal Court had in 2015 on the petition of Blessing Nwagba, sacked Nnamani on the ground that he was not a registered member of his then party, APGA in his ward at the time of the election and equally directed the police to investigate the allegation of certificate forgery against Nnamani, who said he graduated from the University of Port Harcourt.
After the Tribunal judgment, there was a report (not The PUNCH) that the tribunal sacked Nnamani because of certificate forgery and that there was a court ruling banning him from participating in elections for 10 years.
During the altercation, when the driver asked for his delivery fee, Representative Alex Ikwechegh reacted violently, slapping the driver multiple times while arrogantly questioning, “Do you know who I am? I just slapped you, and there’s nothing you will do. My name is Honourable Alex Ikwechegh; tell them I slapped you. Call the Inspector General of Police that I slapped you; let him come. Record me very well,” he boasted.
This incident not only highlights the disturbing behavior of a public official but also raises serious concerns about the abuse of power and the treatment of individuals in the service industry. Ikwechegh’s aggressive stance and blatant disregard for the consequences of his actions reflect a troubling mentality that undermines the integrity of political leadership. Public outrage is likely to mount as citizens demand accountability and a reassessment of how elected officials conduct themselves, especially in interactions with the public.
In response to allegations about his political eligibility, Representative Alex Ikwechegh firmly denied claims that he has been banned by a court from contesting elections in Nigeria for ten years. He described these assertions as “a lie from the pit of hell,” stating, “There was nothing like the court banning me.” Ikwechegh accused opposition parties of fabricating such stories to undermine him.
He emphasized the existence of court records from 2015 that would clarify his legal standing, asserting that he does not wish to undermine the integrity of the judiciary. He acknowledged that there were challenges during that time related to the handling of educational records by an institution, which his opponent exploited. However, he insisted that the institution has since cleared him of any wrongdoing regarding his qualifications.
Ikwechegh’s statements aim to reassure his supporters and counter any narratives that may affect his political career, as he seeks to maintain a strong public image amid ongoing controversies.
