The suspect, Puryavirsingh Sundur, a 29-year-old IT engineer from Mauritius, has been detained in connection with the murder of Zaliya Shamigulova. According to Russian reports, Sundur met the tourist through the dating app Tinder. He allegedly confessed to the killing, detailing how he stabbed and mutilated her, as reported by law enforcement sources.
Local detectives are continuing their search for the missing body parts and clothing of Zaliya Shamigulova, whose funeral ceremony was held before her body was to be returned to Russia. Authorities suspect that the killer initially intended to dismember her body but instead buried it in a makeshift grave in La Marie, a residential area of Mauritius.
The suspect, Puryavirsingh Sundur, allegedly confessed to the murder after police found her blood in his car. He reportedly claimed he killed her in a jealous rage after discovering her supposed infidelity. Sundur is said to have led the police to the burial site.
Shamigulova was last seen on video wearing a white and blue dress as she got into a blue Toyota car, the last time she was seen alive. A female traveling companion reported her missing, and her family in Russia received strange messages purportedly from her, stating that she had decided to disappear.
Before her tragic death, Shamigulova had been enjoying her holiday in Mauritius, sharing that she was “catching happiness every day.” She was a university teacher from Chelyabinsk in the Urals and had served as a torchbearer ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. She had planned to travel to Madagascar on September 1.
