George Clooney appeared to be embracing a potential midlife crisis during a lunch date in New York City on Sunday, debuting a startling new look — a head of dyed-brown hair. The 63-year-old actor was spotted with wife Amal Clooney, 47, after dining at the French restaurant Raoul’s, where they met up with their attorney friend, Kevin Johnson.
While many Hollywood stars have turned to dye jobs in an attempt to recapture their youth, Clooney’s new look is most likely for his upcoming Broadway debut in Good Night, And Good Luck, an adaptation of the 2005 film that he both wrote and directed. In the play, he will star as legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow, a character who was known for his distinct gray hair during the period Clooney is portraying.
Clooney, ever the style icon, looked effortlessly cool in a black leather jacket, beige chinos, and classic black-and-white Adidas trainers. He kept a low profile with dark sunglasses and a large black backpack, before getting into a white SUV post-lunch. Amal, as stylish as ever, wore a cropped brown plaid jacket with wide, peaked lapels, paired with trendy high-waisted bell-bottoms that almost covered her shoes. She accessorized with chunky sunglasses and long, dangling earrings, and her voluminous brunette hair had been lightened to a shade nearly matching her husband’s new brown locks.
While Clooney had previously been seen with his signature silver hair just last month, his recent transformation suggests the dyed look is for his role in Good Night, And Good Luck, where he will take on the role of Murrow, a character who did have visible gray hair at the time. In the original 2005 film, David Strathairn played the lead role, with Clooney taking on a supporting role as CBS President Fred Friendly, in addition to his behind-the-scenes work.
The film, shot in black-and-white, focused on Murrow’s confrontations with Senator Joseph McCarthy and his unfounded claims of communist infiltration in the U.S. government, which ultimately led to McCarthy’s humiliation and censure. The all-star cast included Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Daniels, Patricia Clarkson, Frank Langella, and Ray Wise.#newsafro_
