The United States has temporarily eased sanctions on 140 million barrels of Iranian oil in a move aimed at curbing rising global energy costs, according to Ambassador Mike Waltz, the US representative to the United Nations. Speaking at a CNN town hall, Waltz described the action as “very temporary” and intended to counter Tehran’s strategy of driving up oil prices.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. President Donald Trump indicated that the US is considering “winding down” military operations in the region, though officials report that thousands of additional troops are being deployed. Tehran, however, has expressed skepticism about the US intentions.
Tensions escalated further this week when Iran launched missiles targeting the US-UK military base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, approximately 2,370 miles from Iran’s coast. US officials confirmed that the missiles did not strike the facility.
Meanwhile, Trump criticized NATO allies for what he called a lack of support in securing the strategic Strait of Hormuz and downplayed the chances of a ceasefire in the region. Analysts, including Goldman Sachs, have warned that higher oil prices could persist into 2027, despite the temporary sanction relief.#newsafro_
