Bruce Bilson, an Emmy Award–winning television director and the grandfather of actress Rachel Bilson, died on Friday at the age of 97 at his residence in Los Angeles. His passing was confirmed by his daughter, Julie Bilson Ahlberg, who stated that he died peacefully.
Bilson received an Emmy Award in 1968 for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy for his work on the Get Smart episode Maxwell Smart, Private Eye. Over the course of his career, he directed more than 400 episodes of television, contributing to numerous landmark series of the era, including The Brady Bunch, MASH*, The Andy Griffith Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Odd Couple and Hogan’s Heroes.
His extensive body of work also included credits on Hawaii Five-O, The Patty Duke Show, The Doris Day Show, Barney Miller, The Fall Guy, Dinosaurs, The Sentinel and Knight Rider. In addition, Bilson worked closely for many years with industry pioneers Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz through their production company, Desilu.
Reflecting on his time at Desilu in a 2008 interview with the Television Academy Foundation, Bilson described the studio environment as collaborative and creatively fulfilling, noting its role as a hub for several influential sitcoms of the period.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, in May 1928, Bilson relocated with his family to Los Angeles during childhood. Both of his parents were employed in the entertainment industry, which contributed to his early exposure to film and television. He began his career as a teenage film extra and later graduated from UCLA as part of the institution’s inaugural class of film students.
Following service in the United States Air Force, Bilson worked as an editor on NBC’s You Bet Your Life before advancing into assistant director roles and ultimately establishing himself as a prolific television director. In later reflections, he credited his professional growth to a focus on storytelling through performance rather than technical elements alone.
Rachel Bilson acknowledged her grandfather’s passing by sharing a link to his obituary on social media. The family has requested that donations in his memory be made to CASA of Los Angeles. A memorial service is scheduled to be held at Hillside Memorial Park in Los Angeles.
Bilson is survived by his wife, Renne Jarrett; his children and stepchild; multiple grandchildren, including Rachel Bilson; and two great-grandchildren.#newsafro_
