Pamela Warner, mother of the late Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner, has spoken publicly for the first time regarding her son’s death, nearly three weeks after his tragic drowning during a family trip to Costa Rica.
The actor, aged fifty-four, died on July 20 along the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Authorities determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation due to submersion. At the time of the incident, he had been swimming with his eight-year-old daughter when both were caught in a rip current. Conflicting accounts of the circumstances have since surfaced, contributing to public uncertainty surrounding the tragedy.
On Wednesday, Ms. Warner launched an Instagram account dedicated to her son’s memory, where she shared an emotional statement assuring that “he did not suffer” in his final moments.
Pamela Warner’s inaugural post on the newly created Instagram account featured a photograph of her late son, accompanied by words of appreciation for the public’s support.
In a subsequent post, she expressed gratitude for the compassion shown in the weeks following his passing, writing: “Thank you to everyone who has reached out over the last few weeks. Your outpouring of love and kindness has been immeasurable, and deeply appreciated ❤️.”
Pamela Warner reflected deeply on her late son’s life and legacy, describing him as having “left an indelible mark on the world.”
In a heartfelt statement, she wrote: “Needless to say our hearts are heavy with the loss of Malcolm. He was a kind, loving man with a huge heart for humanity. He wanted all to be aware of their inner strength and that they could succeed, accomplish, and transform. This was his latest mission and work — transformation — in order for you to be fully present in your life.”
She characterized Malcolm as an “exceptional husband, father, and son,” as well as her “teacher, coach, confidant, business partner, and best friend.” She added that he was “in love with the magic of being an actor,” continually studying and refining his craft.
Beyond acting, Pamela noted Malcolm’s passion for music. As a bassist, he formed his own band, Miles Long, and as both a musician and poet, he released four albums, earning two Grammy nominations and one Grammy Award.
Pamela concluded by reiterating the breadth of his impact: “Malcolm left an indelible mark on the world and on countless hearts. All who met him, however briefly, were better for the encounter. As his mother, there is much that I can say. It would fill volumes. But what I will say is that I am so very blessed that he chose me to be his mother, to come into the world through the waters of my womb.”#newsafro_
