Actor Adam Sandler, aged 58, maintained his signature casual style during his appearance on Monday at the New York City premiere of his latest Netflix production, Happy Gilmore 2.
The longtime comedic actor arrived on the red carpet wearing a relaxed summer outfit, which included a yellow Hawaiian-style shirt featuring purple, blue, and green accents, paired with peach-colored shorts. He completed the ensemble with blue-gray athletic sneakers and white crew socks.
Brooklyn-born actor Adam Sandler reprises his iconic role in Happy Gilmore 2, a sequel arriving nearly three decades after the original film debuted in theaters in February 1996.
The Saturday Night Live alumnus appeared at the New York City premiere sporting a full beard, accompanied by his wife, Jackie Sandler, aged 50, as they attended the red carpet event on a warm summer evening in Manhattan.
The occasion was marked by a bittersweet tone, as the sequel underwent substantial revisions following the passing of actor Carl Weathers in February 2024. Weathers, who played a memorable role in the original film, was a significant part of the Happy Gilmore legacy, and his absence was deeply felt in the production of the follow-up.
In the original 1996 film, the late Carl Weathers portrayed the character Derick “Chubbs” Peterson, a retired professional golfer and mentor to Adam Sandler’s titular character. According to Sandler, Weathers was intended to have ‘a massive part’ in the sequel.
Speaking to Collider, Sandler revealed that Weathers’ unexpected death in February 2024 necessitated a significant and emotionally difficult revision of the screenplay.
“I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away,” Sandler stated. “We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change.”
Sandler explained that in the original draft of the sequel, Weathers’ role was not only expanded but also supported by new characters designed to reinforce his narrative presence.
“In the first version that we came up with, he had a son,” Sandler said. “He was coming back to me a lot in my dreams, and he had a son who was mad at Happy for causing the death of daddy.”
In the original storyline, Chubbs Peterson was depicted as a golfer forced into early retirement following an accident involving an alligator, resulting in the loss of his hand, which was replaced with a wooden prosthetic. His mentorship played a central role in Happy Gilmore’s transition from failed hockey player to competitive golfer.
Upon the passing of Carl Weathers in February 2024, Adam Sandler issued a heartfelt tribute via social media, honoring the late actor—who was also a former professional football player—as a deeply respected individual, father, performer, and athlete.
Weathers, widely recognized for his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the Rocky film franchise, was remembered by Sandler as ‘so much fun to be around always.’
‘Smart as hell. Loyal as hell. Funny as hell. Loved his sons more than anything,’ Sandler wrote. ‘What a guy!! Everyone loved him. My wife and I had the best times with him every time we saw him.’
He concluded his message with a tribute to Weathers’ enduring legacy, stating: ‘Love to his entire family, and Carl will always be known as a true legend.’
The upcoming Netflix sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, directed by Kyle Newacheck, reunites several original cast members, including Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and Ben Stiller.
Regrettably, several original cast members from the 1996 film have passed away in the nearly three decades since its release. This includes longtime television host Bob Barker, who died at age 99 in August 2023; actress Frances Bay, who passed in September 2011 at the age of 92; and actor Richard Kiel, who died in 2014 at the age of 74.#newsafro_
