Sean “Diddy” Combs, 55, reportedly received a standing ovation from fellow inmates upon his return to jail after being acquitted of charges that carried the possibility of a life sentence.
According to his attorney, Marc Agnifilo, the disgraced music mogul was met with enthusiastic applause from fellow detainees who celebrated his rare legal victory.
“They all said: ‘We never get to see anyone who beats the government,'” Agnifilo told The Associated Press in a weekend interview.
The ovation followed a federal jury’s decision to acquit Combs of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges, marking a stunning turn in one of the most high-profile cases of the year.
Combs’ acquittal not only delivered a legal reprieve, but also appeared to galvanize hope among fellow inmates, highlighting the rarity of such outcomes in federal court.
Despite his recent acquittals on the most serious federal charges, Sean “Diddy” Combs remains in custody at a federal detention facility in Brooklyn following his conviction last Wednesday on prostitution-related offenses, which could result in a prison sentence extending several more years.
Any sentence imposed will account for time already served, which currently totals nearly 10 months.
Combs’ attorney, Marc Agnifilo, also recalled that following the federal raids on the hip-hop mogul’s residences in Los Angeles and Miami in March 2024, he had warned Combs that sex trafficking charges were imminent, a prediction that later proved accurate as the case unfolded in court.
While Combs avoided a life sentence by prevailing on the most severe counts, his legal battles are far from over, as sentencing on the remaining conviction still looms.
In a recent interview, attorney Marc Agnifilo reflected on a pivotal moment with his client, Sean “Diddy” Combs, during the high-profile federal trial.
“I said: ‘Maybe it’s your fate in life to be the guy who wins,’” Agnifilo recalled during a telephone interview, which was momentarily interrupted by a jailhouse call from Combs.
“They need to see that someone can win. I think he took that to heart.”
The acquittal on sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges followed a carefully executed legal strategy by a defense team of eight attorneys, led by Agnifilo. Over the course of the two-month trial, the defense conducted aggressive and effective cross-examinations of nearly three dozen witnesses, including several of Combs’ former employees. Throughout the proceedings, Combs actively participated, reportedly passing notes to his attorneys during crucial moments.
The defense acknowledged Combs’ problematic personal behavior—including jealousy, domestic violence, substance abuse, and involvement in the swinger lifestyle, including threesomes with his girlfriends and another man.
During her May opening statement, defense attorney Teny Geragos addressed these issues directly:
“You may think to yourself, wow, he is a really bad boyfriend,” she told the jury. “But that,” she emphasized, “is simply not sex trafficking.”
Agnifilo said the team deliberately chose to confront the uncomfortable facts head-on:
“The violence was so clear and up front, and we knew the government was going to try to confuse the jury into thinking it was part of a sex trafficking effort. So we had to tell the jury what it was, so they wouldn’t think it was something it wasn’t.”
Despite their success on the most serious charges, Combs and his legal team were visibly shaken on the penultimate day of deliberations, when jurors announced they were deadlocked on the racketeering charge but had reached a decision on sex trafficking and lesser prostitution-related offenses.
At that point, the judge directed the jury to continue deliberations, ultimately leading to Combs’ partial acquittal and his ongoing detention pending sentencing on the remaining conviction.#newsafro_
