Family members of military personnel who lost their lives in recent engagements against insurgents in the North-East region have expressed profound grief over their losses and have called upon the Federal Government to bring an immediate end to the ongoing violence in the area.
In separate interviews with Saturday PUNCH, the bereaved relatives appealed to the Federal Government to exhibit sincere dedication to the counter-insurgency efforts by ensuring the provision of sufficient arms and ammunition, enhancing the welfare and living conditions of active military personnel, and extending appropriate support and care to the families of deceased soldiers.
The families rendered their statements following the attack on Monday targeting a military installation located in Marte, Borno State, resulting in the fatalities of five service members.
According to reports, Boko Haram insurgents executed an assault on the Forward Operating Base during the early hours of the day, subduing the on-duty personnel, seizing weaponry, and absconding with military vehicles.
Multiple military informants conveyed to Saturday PUNCH that certain soldiers who witnessed the attack subsequently abandoned their posts and retreated to their respective hometowns.
Notwithstanding these reports, the Defence Headquarters officially stated that the troops successfully repelled the assault.#newsafro_
