In a recent public appearance, actor Danny Dyer disclosed longstanding tensions with former EastEnders co-stars Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace, particularly surrounding their characters’ displacement as the central figures of the Queen Vic pub.
Dyer, who portrayed Mick Carter from 2013 to 2022, recounted that upon his and Kellie Bright’s introduction as the new landlords of the Queen Vic, Richie and Wallace—known for their roles as Alfie Moon and Kat Slater—were notably unwelcoming. He remarked, “We took the pub and they got the hump,” indicating that the transition was met with resistance from the duo.
The actor further elaborated that the initial atmosphere was “cold,” necessitating a six-month period during which he and Bright had to “earn their stripes” to gain acceptance on set. Dyer also expressed dissatisfaction with certain storylines during his tenure, including his character’s relationship with Janine Butcher and the handling of Lola Pearce’s brain tumor plot, which he felt underutilized actress Danielle Harold’s talents.
These revelations shed light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics of the long-running BBC soap and the challenges faced during cast transitions.
