Max George has revealed that he made the heartbreaking decision to write a will after fearing he might die while in the hospital for an emergency heart operation. The 36-year-old Wanted singer had a pacemaker fitted after being admitted in December due to heart issues.
Thankfully, Max was discharged in time for Christmas and has been recovering at home, supported by his girlfriend, Maisie Smith, 23.
In a recent interview, Max George opened up about the overwhelming fear he experienced while on a hospital ward, surrounded by patients much older than him. He shared that, in case he didn’t make it, he left instructions on his iPhone, including writing a will.
He told The Sun: “That first night I wrote a will, I thought I was going to die. If I could go from being absolutely on top of the world to being told ‘the bottom part of your heart isn’t working’, I kept thinking in my head, ‘Well, what if the top half stops working overnight?’”
The Glad You Came hitmaker explained that being informed he needed a pacemaker due to the bottom part of his heart not functioning properly made him reflect on his “responsibilities,” especially as he considered the loved ones he might leave behind.
Recalling the “really scary” and sleepless first night in the hospital, Max George described struggling to move and battling symptoms like tightness in his throat and slow, deep breaths. Two days after writing his will, Max was thrown into a panic when his heart rate and blood pressure dropped, describing it as “the worst day” of his hospital stay.
He shared: “It was quite close that night, it really felt like my neck was closing up and that’s when the sort of panic really kicked in. I felt like I was dying. It was the worst, I felt emotional.”
Fortunately, Max had a pacemaker fitted exactly one week after being admitted, remaining conscious throughout the procedure, though heavily sedated. He vividly recalled the “grim” sight of the surgeon’s hand covered in blood as the operation concluded, but felt a sense of relief and excitement knowing he was on the mend.
After the surgery, Max was overjoyed to be greeted by his girlfriend, Maisie Smith, who was the first person to see him. He said it was then that he felt “like a real person again” and truly “had a heart.” Max added, “I had a proper heartbeat by then as well. My heart rate started just shooting up. So I remember feeling my feet going tingly, because I think obviously the blood started to properly pump around. I was like, ‘Holy s, I feel alive again,’ like it was a really nice feeling.”
