A successful lawyer was apprehended for drink-driving following police surveillance initiated after his stepdaughter reported to authorities that he had been engaged in a dispute with her mother, according to court testimony.
The 56-year-old lawyer drove in his £60,000 worth Audi. He was subsequently reported to the authorities.
Council officials initiated a ‘safeguarding’ investigation into Geoffrey Underhill after his stepdaughter informed a student welfare officer that issues at the £1.7 million family residence were impacting her academic performance, as stated to the magistrates.
During the investigation conducted by a council safeguarding officer, the 56-year-old informed her that he routinely stopped for a pint of lager shandy en route to his residence in Bowdon, Greater Manchester, from his £200,000-a-year job.
He asserts that this statement was misinterpreted to suggest he was returning home to engage in drunken arguments with his wife. Consequently, based on this information, police discreetly placed a ‘marker’ on his £60,000 Audi Q7, leading to him being stopped six times over a two-week period, each time passing a breath test.
However, on the seventh occasion, Underhill was found to be one-and-a-half times over the legal alcohol limit. He has since been banned from driving for 12 months after admitting to drink-driving.
