A distraught diver, who was involved in the recovery of tech billionaire Mike Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, from the ill-fated yacht Bayesian, has described the ordeal of navigating through debris during what was termed an “unbearable” search of the wreck.
Giuseppe Petrone, 49, the chief of the Italian Firefighters Dive Team, who led the recovery of tech billionaire Mike Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, from the ill-fated yacht Bayesian, has recounted the “unbearable” search through debris within the wreck. His team faced immense pressure as they worked tirelessly to reach survivors following the tragedy earlier this month, which resulted in the deaths of seven individuals when the 180-foot superyacht sank.
Mr. Petrone, a seasoned diver with extensive experience in underwater rescue operations, directed a team of highly skilled colleagues for nearly a week. They meticulously searched the cabins of the Bayesian, which was submerged approximately 165 feet below the surface off Porticello, near Palermo, Sicily.
He expressed sorrow over Hannah, who was set to begin her studies at Oxford University next month, stating, “That young girl should have been writing important pages of her life, but sadly, the story ended very differently.”
Hannah was the last of the seven victims to be located on the Bayesian, discovered in a cabin at the far end of the yacht, where she was trapped by debris.
