Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has publicly acknowledged the enduring global influence of his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, emphasizing that “hardly any great musician, past and present” has remained untouched by the pioneering Afrobeat sound.
This statement coincides with Fela Kuti being posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday, making him the first African artist to receive this distinction from the Recording Academy. The award was formally accepted on behalf of the family by Fela’s children, Femi, Yeni, and Kunle Kuti.
In an interview with ARISE News in Los Angeles, Femi described the recognition as a long-overdue validation of his father’s artistic independence and innovation. He noted that, while Fela wielded significant influence over mainstream musicians, he deliberately operated outside mainstream conventions, prioritizing his own musical vision.
Femi emphasized that the Grammy honour affirms his father’s global impact and independent spirit, stating that the recognition holds particular significance for Africa as a continent. He further highlighted Fela’s influence on prominent international artists, including Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and stressed that the family did not actively campaign for the award.
The Recording Academy characterized the Lifetime Achievement Award as a formal acknowledgment of Fela Kuti’s contributions to music worldwide, with Femi Kuti affirming the award as a historic milestone for both his family and African music.#newsafro_
