Afrobeats artist Omah Lay has disclosed that he initially believed fellow Nigerian musician Davido harbored a negative disposition toward him, a misconception that was later clarified and ultimately led to their Grammy-nominated collaboration, With You.
The revelation was made during a red carpet interview at the 2026 GRAMMY Awards with OkayAfrica, as reported by HYPETRIBE. Omah Lay recounted encountering a video clip of Davido’s reaction to his music while at home, which dispelled his assumption of animosity and facilitated a professional connection between the two artists.
He described their collaboration as seamless and organic, stating, “It was funny, and we connected so well after that. Boom—magic happened.” The song With You, released in 2025 under Davido’s DMW label, earned Omah Lay his first Grammy nomination.
Regarding expectations for the award, Omah Lay expressed confidence while acknowledging the depth of Nigerian representation in the category, citing nominees including Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Wizkid. Ultimately, the award for Best African Music Performance was presented to South African artist Tyla for Push 2 Start, surpassing With You and other Nigerian entries.
The nomination reinforces Omah Lay’s emerging prominence within Afrobeats and underscores Nigeria’s ongoing influence on the global music industry.#newsafro_
