Renowned Ghanaian fashion entrepreneur and international model, Belinda Baidoo, has formally appealed to the government to appoint her as the nation’s official Fashion Brand Ambassador, asserting that such a role would strengthen Ghana’s global visibility through fashion and the creative arts.
Baidoo, whose career includes collaborations with international brands such as Nike, Victoria’s Secret, and Giorgio Armani, emphasized that while she has already contributed to promoting Ghana abroad, an official platform would enhance her ability to represent the country strategically on the world stage.
In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Baidoo stated, “I am calling on the government to make me Ghana’s fashion ambassador. Fashion remains one of Ghana’s strongest cultural exports when properly supported. Fashion can project Ghana beautifully to the world, and I’m ready to be part of that story. Proper representation on the global front will do the magic for us.”
Addressing challenges within the local fashion industry, Baidoo highlighted structural issues, particularly the instability of the Ghanaian cedi, which increases production costs for entrepreneurs reliant on imported materials. She noted that currency stability is critical for both businesses and consumers, stating, “Once the currency is stable, the customer is happy and the business owner is also happy. And when the customer is happy, everything works well.”
Baidoo also emphasized the international demand for Ghanaian and African-inspired fashion, noting that contemporary designers are reimagining traditional prints to appeal to a wider global audience. She further stressed the importance of nurturing the local market, remarking, “The majority of the people who helped build this business are my local Ghanaian brothers and sisters, and then the international world too.”
To emerging designers, Baidoo advised patience and proper industry training before launching independent brands. “Don’t rush to open your own store immediately. Do internships, learn the trade and put in the work. When it’s time for your own brand, it will flow naturally and become easier to manage,” she said.
Belinda Baidoo’s request underscores her vision for a formalized role that leverages her experience to promote Ghana’s fashion industry internationally while reinforcing local industry growth.#newsafro_
