Keanu Reeves has stepped in to support his friend and former collaborator, director Carl Rinsch, by writing a letter to a federal judge asking for leniency ahead of Rinsch’s sentencing in a high-profile Netflix fraud case.
Rinsch was convicted in December on federal charges including wire fraud and money laundering after prosecutors alleged he misused millions of dollars provided by Netflix for a sci-fi series titled “White Horse.” Authorities claim the funds—reportedly totaling around $11 million—were instead spent on a lavish personal lifestyle.
In a sentencing memorandum filed with the court, Reeves described how he first met Rinsch while working on the 2013 film “47 Ronin,” and later developed a friendship with him. The actor noted that Rinsch can be prone to “self-sabotage,” while also praising his creative vision and artistic talent.
Reeves also referenced “White Horse,” recalling early versions of the project and calling it a “superb and visionary” concept that showcased Rinsch’s ambition as a filmmaker.
Despite the serious allegations, Reeves portrayed Rinsch as an “exceptional artist” who brings warmth and inspiration to those around him, urging the court to consider a lighter sentence.
Rinsch is scheduled to be sentenced on June 29, and the judge will decide whether Reeves’ character reference will have any impact on the final ruling.#newsafro_
