Serena Williams is stepping back onto the tennis court, ending speculation about her future in the sport with a surprise announcement that she is returning to competition.
The 39-time Grand Slam champion revealed the news in a new Nike advertisement, which shows her on the court as her phone lights up with calls and messages. As she reaches for the device, the words “Guess everybody heard the news” appear on screen before Williams jokes, “I gotta change my number.”
The announcement follows recent reports that Williams is set to compete in doubles at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club next week. It also comes months after she re-entered the anti-doping program, a requirement for active professional players, fueling rumors that a comeback could be on the horizon.
Those rumors were initially dismissed by Williams, who took to social media in December to insist she had no plans to return. At the time, she wrote that people were reading too much into the situation and denied that a comeback was in the works.
Still, many fans never believed Williams had completely closed the door on her playing career after her emotional farewell at the 2022 U.S. Open. The tennis icon often described her retirement as temporary, saying she was stepping away “for now” rather than permanently.
Since leaving the tour, Williams has focused on her growing business ventures and family life with husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Now, however, she appears ready to return to the sport that made her one of the most celebrated athletes in history.
With Williams officially back, tennis fans around the world will be eager to see whether the legendary champion can once again make her mark on the game.#newsafro_
