The murder trial of Texas teenager Karmelo Anthony has officially begun, marking a major turning point in a case that has drawn widespread public attention and debate.
Jury selection kicked off today as Anthony faces charges in connection with the fatal stabbing of fellow high school student Austin Metcalf during a track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025. Both teens were 17 at the time of the incident.
According to reports and court records, Anthony is claiming he acted in self-defense during the confrontation. He allegedly told police that Metcalf became physical after being warned not to touch him, leading to an escalation that ended with Anthony allegedly pulling a knife from his bag and stabbing Metcalf in the chest. Metcalf later died from his injuries.
Anthony was arrested following the incident and later indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge. He was initially released on a $250,000 bond as the case moved forward.
The case quickly gained national attention, sparking intense public reaction. While there was initially widespread sympathy for Metcalf and his family, public opinion later became more divided after fundraising efforts began for Anthony’s legal defense. His family has reportedly raised significant funds through online platforms to support his legal team, which includes Dallas attorney Mike Howard.
The controversy surrounding the case has also fueled broader discussions online, including debates over race and justice, after statements tied to the defense fund referenced claims of fighting against “white supremacy.”
As proceedings begin, the courtroom is expected to focus first on jury selection before opening arguments are heard in what is likely to be a closely watched and emotionally charged trial.#newsafro_
