Brian McKnight has filed a defamation lawsuit accusing his ex-wife, Julie McKnight, and son, Brian McKnight Jr., of collaborating with media outlets and online commentators in what he describes as a coordinated effort to damage his reputation.
In a federal complaint filed in Atlanta on Tuesday, the “Back At One” singer alleges that the defendants worked with publications including the New York Post as well as media figures such as Marc Lamont Hill and Tasha K to promote what he calls a “malicious character assassination” for profit.
McKnight claims the alleged campaign spread a “sensational but false narrative” that he had abandoned his children and, in particular, that he refused to express love to his late son, Niko McKnight, before his death from cancer in May 2025 at the age of 32.
According to court documents, the singer argues these accusations have caused significant harm to his personal reputation, family relationships, and professional career. He is seeking damages for defamation and emotional distress.
The filing also references a 2019 social media post by Brian McKnight Jr., which McKnight says contributed to public claims that he had abandoned his children. He contends the post was widely shared online and later used to reinforce what he describes as a false narrative.
McKnight further points to interviews conducted in late 2025 in which his ex-wife and son allegedly repeated claims that he withheld contact and affection from his son during his final illness. He disputes these allegations in their entirety.
The lawsuit follows months of public discussion and media coverage surrounding the family’s long-running dispute, which has increasingly played out across social media, interviews, and news reports.#newsafro_
