Eric Dane has died at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his family confirmed on Thursday. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two teenage daughters, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.
ALS is a progressive neuron-degenerative disorder affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, ultimately resulting in loss of voluntary muscle control and, in advanced stages, paralysis. Mr. Dane publicly disclosed his diagnosis in April. By June, he revealed that he had lost function in his right arm and hand, and by October he was reportedly using a wheelchair as the condition advanced.
Born on November 9, 1972, Mr. Dane relocated to Los Angeles at age 21 to pursue an acting career. His early television appearances included roles on Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, and Married… with Children. His first significant recurring role came in 2000 on Gideon’s Crossing, followed by his portrayal of Jason Dean on Charmed.
In 2005, Mr. Dane guest-starred on Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Mark Sloan. The character’s strong reception led to his promotion to series regular beginning in the third season. He remained with the series through its eighth season, briefly returning in season nine before his character was written off.
More recently, he portrayed Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, which premiered in 2019. In April, he had confirmed plans to reprise the role for the show’s third and final season, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to continue working amid his health challenges.
Mr. Dane’s film credits included appearances in Marley & Me, Burlesque, Valentine’s Day, and Americana. He also featured in the film Borderline, directed by Jimmy Warden.
Following his diagnosis, Mr. Dane spoke candidly about the emotional toll of the illness, stating in a televised interview that he was reminded daily of his condition. Ms. Gayheart likewise addressed the impact of the diagnosis on their family, noting that their daughters were receiving therapeutic support as they navigated the progression of the disease.
His passing has prompted widespread tributes from colleagues and fans, reflecting on both his professional legacy and his openness in confronting a life-altering illness.#newsafro_
