Following the burial of the late gospel singer Bunmi Akinaanu, professionally known as Omije Ojumi, her estranged husband, Rotimi Adeoye, publicly disclosed details regarding their prior marriage and ongoing familial disputes. The disclosures were circulated via YouTube on Yeye Kudi Courtroom TV, including a recorded phone conversation in which Mr. Adeoye discussed the circumstances surrounding the marriage, separation, and his relationship with their children.
Omije Ojumi and Mr. Adeoye were married in 2006, first at Surulere Magistrate Court, followed by a religious ceremony at ECWA Church in Mushin. Their marriage reportedly ended in 2010, with legal dissolution finalized between 2017 and 2018. Sources indicate that the union was affected by migration challenges to the United Kingdom, financial difficulties, and personal disagreements, with custody of the children central to ongoing disputes.
Mr. Adeoye, currently believed to reside abroad, has reportedly remarried. Ms. Akinaanu returned to Nigeria after separation and raised the children as a single parent until her death in late 2025. Public fundraising efforts supported her medical care during this period.
In his post-burial statements, Mr. Adeoye alleged that the marriage failed due to infidelity and deceit, asserting that Ms. Akinaanu took their first child, Jomiloju, to Nigeria without his consent and subsequently restricted his contact with the children. He stated that he continued to provide financial support, including school fees, yet was denied access to his children for over eight years. He further alleged that the children were influenced against him and resided in what he characterized as an “underground lifestyle” in Nigeria. Mr. Adeoye called for DNA testing and indicated his intent to pursue legal custody while maintaining that he seeks reconciliation.
The minor daughter, Jomiloju, reportedly delivered a tribute at the burial service, praising her mother while alleging abandonment by her father. She stated that an uncle assumed a fatherly role and expressed her intent to honor her mother’s wishes through academic and familial commitments.
Additionally, representatives of Ms. Akinaanu’s colleagues in the gospel music industry addressed the controversy, asserting that funeral arrangements were initially coordinated with family consent, but later opposed, resulting in police involvement and disputes over participation in the burial. Both families have publicly defended their positions regarding the graveside events, with allegations of manipulation and obstructed reconciliation efforts arising from multiple parties.#newsafro_
