Blair Waldorf is formally set to re-enter the Upper East Side social sphere.
According to reports by Deadline, the character, originally portrayed by Leighton Meester, will serve as the principal subject of a forthcoming novel authored by Gossip Girl creator Cecily von Ziegesar. The publication constitutes the first substantive literary continuation of the franchise in over twenty years.
The novel, provisionally titled Blair, is set approximately two decades after the events of the original series and will depict the former Manhattan socialite, now in her forties, as she returns to New York City and seeks to reestablish her status within the Upper East Side’s elite social hierarchy. At present, further plot details have not been publicly disclosed.
The book will be written by von Ziegesar and is tentatively scheduled for release in Summer 2027. While no television or film adaptation is currently in active development, the project is anticipated to generate significant industry interest.
The original Gossip Girl novels, first published in 2002, achieved substantial commercial success, selling in excess of six million copies worldwide, being translated into 25 languages, and remaining on The New York Times bestseller list for more than 100 weeks. The books subsequently gave rise to the CW television series, which aired from 2007 to 2012, as well as a later reboot on HBO Max that premiered in 2021.
The reboot introduced a re-imagined identity of “Gossip Girl” as a collective of private-school teachers led by Kate Keller, portrayed by Tavi Gevinson. Series creator and show-runner Joshua Safran explained that the decision was informed by his observations of private-school culture and his interest in exploring narrative perspectives not addressed in the original series, particularly the ethical and personal consequences faced by the teachers themselves.
Safran characterized the storyline as a cautionary narrative, emphasizing the moral complexity and unintended repercussions associated with wielding such influence.
The original television series became a defining cultural phenomenon of the late 2000s, starring Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, and Taylor Momsen, with Kristen Bell serving as narrator.
