Attorneys for YNW Melly have sharply criticized a court decision denying the rapper bond as he awaits a retrial in his double murder case, arguing that his continued detention amounts to “inhumane conditions” and drawing comparisons to another recent federal case.
The ruling, delivered on Thursday, keeps Melly—whose legal name is Jamell Demons—in custody ahead of his upcoming retrial. His legal team, Drew Findling and Carey Haughwout, condemned the decision in a statement, saying it overlooks the harsh realities of his confinement.
In their remarks, the attorneys referenced a separate case involving an alleged attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, where a magistrate judge reportedly apologized for the suspect’s brief time in solitary confinement. They argued the contrast highlights inconsistencies in how detainees are treated by the justice system.
Melly’s lawyers maintain that he has spent more than seven years in custody, including roughly three years in solitary confinement, while awaiting trial. They described his detention conditions as unusually severe and said colleagues within the legal community have also expressed shock at his treatment.
The rapper is currently scheduled to face retrial in January 2027 over allegations tied to the 2018 killings of Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams.
The court has not yet responded to the defense’s latest criticism.#newsafro_
