Plans for the interment of the late gospel singer, Bunmi Akinnaanu, professionally known as Omije Ojumi, have been formally suspended due to unresolved internal family matters.
The suspension was publicly communicated on Saturday by gospel musician Lanre Alewilese via his official Instagram account. In his statement, Alewilese announced that all burial plans and arrangements previously initiated by the Burial Planning Committee had been entirely withdrawn, citing issues emanating from within the deceased’s family as the basis for the decision. He expressed regret for any inconvenience occasioned by the development.
Prior to the suspension, scheduled burial activities in Lagos included a service of songs, candlelight procession, and tribute night slated for Tuesday, January 20, at the LTV 8 Ground, Ikeja, as well as a private interment for immediate family members and close associates on January 21.
In a subsequent video message delivered in Yoruba, Alewilese clarified that the decision was neither unilateral nor personal, but rather a collective resolution reached by both the family and the Burial Planning Committee. He stated that he was merely mandated to inform the public of the change, emphasizing that all previously announced program had been placed on hold pending further deliberations by the family, who would issue an update in due course.
Ms. Akinnaanu passed away on January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos. Her demise was earlier announced by fellow gospel singer Ayo Melody in a statement issued on behalf of the family, confirming her death and offering prayers for her eternal rest.
Widely known by the appellation Omije Ojumi, derived from her popular gospel song, the deceased commenced her music career at a young age and later relinquished a banking profession to pursue gospel ministry full-time. While a video circulated in October 2025 showing prayers being offered for her during a church service over an undisclosed illness, no official statement has established any causal link between that condition and her passing.
The family has indicated that revised burial arrangements will be communicated at a later date.#newsafro_
