Bill Maher, a long-standing host known for delivering satirical commentary on HBO’s Real Time, found himself the subject of public ridicule on Sunday evening during the 83rd Golden Globe Awards. The 69-year-old comedian was present in the audience as fellow comedian Wanda Sykes, aged 61, delivered remarks while presenting the award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
In the course of her presentation, Sykes directed pointed humor toward each of the nominated individuals, including Brett Goldstein, Kevin Hart, Kumail Nanjiani, Ricky Gervais, and Sarah Silverman. Notably, Maher appeared less receptive to the remarks than his fellow nominees. After indicating an intention to show the nominees “some love,” Sykes addressed Maher directly, stating that while he provides the public with a great deal, she would “love a little less,” further urging him to “try less.” These remarks elicited audible laughter from the audience; however, Maher did not participate, initially appearing confused before adopting a visibly impassive demeanor.
Representatives for Maher have been contacted for comment.
Sykes proceeded to address the remaining nominees in turn. Brett Goldstein, a star of Ted Lasso, was complimented for his appearance and voice before being jokingly likened to one of the Menendez brothers, a comparison that Goldstein received with visible amusement. Kevin Hart was described as the wealthiest nominee in the category, with Sykes humorously asserting that he nevertheless desired the award the most. Hart reacted with laughter alongside the audience.
Sykes also commented on Kumail Nanjiani’s physical transformation for his role in Marvel’s The Eternals, observing that he exemplified that male comedians could be humorous without conforming to a stereotypically chubby physique, remarks that appeared to amuse both Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon.
Addressing Sarah Silverman, Sykes jokingly characterized their friendship as close despite a lack of communication over several years, offering well wishes in a lighthearted manner.
The most pointed commentary was reserved for Ricky Gervais, who was not present at the ceremony. Sykes remarked that she appreciated his absence and joked that, should he win, she would accept the award on his behalf and thank both God and the transgender community—references tied to Gervais’ public atheism and past controversy surrounding jokes perceived as anti-transgender. Gervais has previously denied such characterizations, stating in a 2020 interview that offense often arises from confusion between the subject and target of a joke.
Upon announcing Gervais as the winner, Sykes followed through on her remarks by thanking God and the transgender community during the acceptance. Representatives for Gervais have also been contacted for comment.
Beyond the comedic exchanges, the ceremony featured notable awards outcomes. Timothée Chalamet emerged as the leading Best Actor Oscar contender after winning at the Golden Globes for Marty Supreme, surpassing prior favorite Leonardo DiCaprio. While DiCaprio’s film One Battle After Another ultimately prevailed in the Best Picture – Comedy or Musical category and secured four awards overall, Chalamet’s victory significantly shifted awards-season projections.
On the television side, The Pitt, The Studio, and Adolescence received top honors in their respective categories. Adolescence had a particularly successful evening, with multiple acting wins and Best Limited Series recognition. Meanwhile, Chalamet drew attention for a comparatively restrained acknowledgment of his partner, Kylie Jenner, during his acceptance speech, contrasting with a more effusive statement made at a prior awards event.
Overall, the evening was marked by sharp humor, notable industry recognition, and moments of visible discomfort, particularly during Maher’s unexpected turn as the subject rather than the source of televised satire.#newsafro_
