Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has opened up about the tragic deaths of two close friends in a fatal car crash, recounting the incident in an emotional discussion with former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
The conversation, featured in a YouTube video posted by Usman on Wednesday, occurred while Joshua was recovering from injuries sustained in the accident, which took place on December 29 along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The crash claimed the lives of Joshua’s friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Joshua was rescued from the wreckage and received medical treatment at Duchess International Hospital before returning to the United Kingdom.
In the video, Joshua, bandaged and recovering in a treatment room, described the positions of his friends in the car, saying, “One was in the front and one was behind him, on the right side. They both passed away. It still hasn’t sunk in. It still hasn’t hit me yet.” Usman responded with condolences and reflected on the fragility of life, prompting Joshua to remark, “Life is short, man. Life is short. And now look, I get to speak with you for the first time.”
Joshua also acknowledged the overwhelming support he received following the accident, noting that the incident highlighted how closely people were watching over him. On social media, he shared a photograph of himself standing alongside the bereaved families, captioning the post: “My Brother’s Keeper,” demonstrating solidarity and support during their time of grief.#newsafro_
