Joseph Aloba, father of the late musician Ilerioluwa “Mohbad” Aloba, has refuted allegations that he is attempting to improperly influence the ongoing DNA proceedings concerning his grandson, Liam.
In a statement issued through his legal representative, Oladayo Ogungbe, and transmitted to PUNCH Metro on Monday, Aloba stated that his sole objective is to ensure that the DNA process is transparent, credible, and free from manipulation. He stressed that he was the party who initiated the DNA application at the outset and has never acted to delay or interfere with the matter, contrary to public speculation.
According to the statement, Aloba’s most recent application seeks court-supervised collection, handling, and analysis of DNA samples, and requests that the testing be conducted at internationally accredited laboratories in the United States and the United Kingdom at his expense. The application also calls for samples from both the late singer and Master Liam Aloba to be obtained strictly under judicial oversight.
Ogungbe further noted that developments arising from the coroner’s inquest—including an inconclusive autopsy and a laboratory’s denial of receiving certain key samples—underscore the need for internationally verifiable DNA testing. The legal team reiterated that their requests are intended solely to guarantee transparency, with all relevant parties present during the collection and transfer of samples.
The statement affirmed that Aloba remains fully committed to a fair, transparent, and court-supervised process, and urged the public to rely on verified judicial proceedings rather than unsubstantiated narratives circulating online. It also expressed confidence in the court’s ability to reach a proper and just resolution.
Earlier reporting indicated that the Aloba family had renewed calls for an independent and transparent investigation into Mohbad’s death. In a family statement issued in November, they also directed Mohbad’s partner, Wunmi Adebanjo, to discontinue the use of the family surname pending the completion of the court-ordered DNA assessment, reflecting ongoing tensions regarding paternity and the administration of the late artist’s estate.
Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Aloba, passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command empaneled a 13-member special investigative unit to examine the circumstances surrounding his passing. Subsequent filings in 2024 show that Aloba, through counsel, applied to the coroner’s court in Ikorodu for a formal determination of the cause of death and later petitioned for a DNA test to resolve disputes concerning paternity.#newsafro_
