It is reported that Mr. Victor Osimhen, professional footballer for both the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Galatasaray, has disclosed the persistent effects of a facial injury sustained in November 2021, providing the rationale for his continued use of a protective facial mask four years post-incident.
In a video statement shared on the social media platform X on Tuesday, Mr. Osimhen informed the Turkish media outlet Fanatik that nerve damage resulting from the injury continues to affect his ability to chew and consume food. He stated:
“Currently, I am able to eat only on the right side of my face. The left side no longer functions properly.”
The injury occurred during a Serie A match between Napoli and Inter Milan following a collision with Mr. Milan Škriniar. Mr. Osimhen sustained multiple facial fractures, including a fractured cheekbone and eye socket, necessitating reconstructive surgery involving eighteen screws and the installation of a titanium plate. Medical professionals initially expressed concern that he risked permanent vision loss in his left eye.
Despite successful surgical intervention, Mr. Osimhen reports ongoing numbness and limited mobility on the left side of his face. He recalled the incident as follows:
“A cross came in from the wing. I went up for the header, and he pulled his head back. It was unintentional, but I collided with his skull, shattering the bone. Medical evaluation in Milan included X-ray and MRI, and the physician recommended surgery. I initially declined, but surgery was essential to continue my professional career.”
He further noted residual effects impacting daily function:
“I continue to experience numbness and occasional pain. Smiling engages only one side fully. Eating remains the most significant reminder, as food falls from the left side when I attempt to use it.”
Currently representing Galatasaray, Mr. Osimhen has recorded twelve goals and five assists in fifteen competitive appearances this season. The continued use of the protective facial mask, initially prescribed post-surgery, remains necessary due to the enduring consequences of the 2021 injury.#newsafro_
