Ms. Patti LaBelle, aged 81, recently disclosed that, during the 1980s, she underwent a cosmetic surgical procedure in response to professional pressures within the music industry. In remarks delivered during an interview on The Breakfast Club radio program, Ms. LaBelle recounted that her then-manager—whom she described as a Caucasian male—made repeated disparaging remarks about her physical appearance.
According to Ms. LaBelle, when she inquired of the manager whether she might retain her natural features, he dismissed her concerns in a manner she characterized as unkind. Ultimately, she elected to undergo rhinoplasty, describing the decision as the result of persistent negative commentary and industry expectations.
She further explained that her decision was influenced after visiting her colleague and current Queens Tour co-performer, Ms. Stephanie Mills, who had herself undergone rhinoplasty under the care of Dr. Steven Hoefflin, a surgeon known at the time for his association with Mr. Michael Jackson. Ms. Mills, in turn, noted that Mr. Jackson appeared to have developed an unhealthy dependence upon such procedures.
Ms. LaBelle (née Holte) stated that she believed the cosmetic procedure may have benefited her career, as it rendered her appearance “more pleasant” to certain observers. While she personally found her original features acceptable, she acknowledged that, upon seeing her colleague Ms. Stephanie Mills following her own procedure, she was persuaded to pursue similar treatment.
During the interview, host Charlamagne tha God expressed surprise at the revelation, to which Ms. LaBelle—widely regarded as the “Godmother of Soul”—responded that she felt compelled to undergo the alteration, dismissing her prior appearance as unsatisfactory.
In contrast, Ms. Chaka Khan firmly denied ever having undergone a Brazilian butt lift, emphasizing that her physique has remained unchanged since birth and affirming her refusal to consider surgical enhancement of that nature.
The forthcoming episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen will feature Ms. LaBelle, Ms. Mills, Ms. Khan, and Ms. Gladys Knight, coinciding with the launch of the second leg of The Queens: 4 Legends, 1 Stage Tour, commencing at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Ms. LaBelle, a two-time Grammy Award recipient renowned for her recordings Lady Marmalade and New Attitude, has achieved global sales exceeding 50 million records and currently averages 1.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify. She has been formally recognized through induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame, and the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame.
Beyond her artistic pursuits, Ms. LaBelle operates Patti’s Good Life, a consumer brand offering food products, beverages, condiments, and home goods.#newsafro_
