On Friday, Ms. Mary-Kate Olsen and Ms. Ashley Olsen made a rare public appearance at a New York Fashion Week event co-hosted by W Magazine and Bloomingdale’s.
Once prominent figures in early 2000s popular culture, the sisters, now aged 39, have largely withdrawn from public scrutiny and instead established themselves as fashion entrepreneurs. They currently serve as principals of The Row, a luxury apparel brand with significant commercial success.
At the event, the Olsens presented a restrained and understated aesthetic, posing for photographs with Ms. Sara Moonves, editor-in-chief of W Magazine and daughter of former CBS executive Mr. Leslie Moonves.
At the New York Fashion Week event, Ms. Mary-Kate Olsen wore a printed sweater over a grey top, paired with black trousers, black boots, and a leather handbag. Ms. Ashley Olsen wore a long black coat and a large scarf over an obscured top, with acid-wash jeans.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were born in Sherman Oaks, California, to David and Jarnette Olsen. They have two siblings, Elizabeth and Trent Olsen. The twins first became widely known as child actresses when, at nine months old, they began jointly portraying the character Michelle Tanner on the ABC sitcom Full House in 1987, a role they continued until the series concluded in 1995.
By the mid-1990s, the sisters had become prominent figures in youth entertainment. At age eight, they co-founded their production company, Dualstar, through which they released numerous television films such as Winning London, When in Rome, and New York Minute. They also starred in their first feature film, It Takes Two, alongside Steve Guttenberg, following the end of Full House.
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Olsens produced and starred in a series of international film projects under the Dualstar brand, filmed in locations such as Rome, Paris, The Bahamas, and London.
Upon reaching the age of majority in 2004, the sisters assumed the roles of co-presidents of Dualstar and expanded the company’s operations into consumer products, including fragrances and home décor.
During this period, however, public speculation concerning Ms. Mary-Kate Olsen’s health arose, particularly in connection with rumors of an eating disorder, which became a topic of media attention following an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Ms. Mary-Kate Olsen has never publicly confirmed a diagnosis of an eating disorder. However, in 2004, approximately one week after her 18th birthday, the Olsen family disclosed that she had entered a rehabilitation facility for what was described as a ‘health-related issue.’
In 2003, during an interview with 48 Hours, Ms. Olsen made statements suggesting struggles with body image, remarking on perceived differences in appearance between herself and her sister, Ms. Ashley Olsen.
In 2008, Ms. Olsen addressed the rumors in an interview with Elle Magazine. While neither confirming nor denying them, she stated that personal challenges were part of growing up, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness, honesty, and seeking help when necessary. Her comments were interpreted as equivocal and marked one of her final substantive public statements on the matter, preceding her gradual withdrawal from public life.#newsafro_
