Ms. Padma Lakshmi, age 55, has publicly disclosed, in a feature for Vogue India’s September issue, the nature of sartorial exchanges between herself and her daughter, Krishna Lakshmi, age 15. Both individuals appeared jointly as cover subjects and, in an accompanying interview and social media segment, discussed the manner in which they mutually critique and influence each other’s fashion choices.
During a recorded “Tell the Truth” session, Ms. Lakshmi and her daughter acknowledged that they engage in ongoing, silent assessments of one another’s attire. Krishna articulated what she described as a “five-second rule,” under which negative remarks about an outfit are withheld unless changes may reasonably be effected within five seconds. However, both parties conceded that prior to leaving the home, their feedback is typically candid and, at times, severe.
According to Ms. Lakshmi, her daughter frequently advises her to adopt more revealing attire, while Krishna conversely stated that she is often encouraged by her mother to do the opposite. The interplay of their divergent preferences was presented with humor, as the pair were observed completing each other’s sentences and recounting past disagreements, including a well-known family dispute referred to as “bangle-gate.” That dispute arose when a grade-school-aged Krishna wore Ms. Lakshmi’s gold bangles to school without authorization, prompting a household search for the missing jewelry.
The interview further revealed that mother and daughter routinely borrow clothing from each other’s wardrobes, occasionally without notice, a practice which Ms. Lakshmi admitted causes her frustration. In a separate exchange, Krishna likened her mother to the fictional character Georgia from the Netflix program Ginny & Georgia, citing her resilience and ability to overcome adverse circumstances to achieve success, qualities she stated she deeply admires.#newsafro_
