On the morning of Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the mortal remains of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, departed London, United Kingdom, en route to Daura, Katsina State, via a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, for purposes of final interment.
In a coordinated operation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, a high-level Federal Government delegation was dispatched to the United Kingdom to oversee all requisite documentation and logistical arrangements related to the repatriation of the late President’s remains.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing held on Monday in Abuja, confirmed that the late President’s body is expected to arrive in Nigeria by noon on Tuesday, July 15.
In line with protocol and as a mark of national respect, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is scheduled to personally receive the former President’s remains in Katsina State, prior to their final transfer to Daura for Islamic funeral rites and burial.
All necessary ceremonial and state arrangements are being managed in accordance with federal directives and in consultation with the deceased’s family and relevant religious authorities.
The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has announced additional details concerning the repatriation and state burial of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
Upon arrival of the late President’s remains in Katsina State, a brief military ceremony will be conducted at the airport, in accordance with official state protocol. Following this, the remains will be transported to Daura, where the Jana’iza (Islamic funeral prayer) shall be held, succeeded by interment at the late President’s private residence.
In recognition of President Buhari’s national service and global stature, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the observance of formal national mourning, including the establishment of condolence registers across:
All Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs);
Nigerian embassies and missions in foreign jurisdictions;
The Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja.
Minister Idris further confirmed that Heads of State and Governments from around the world have continued to convey formal condolences, describing the outpouring of tributes as “a testament to the global stature and legacy of President Muhammadu Buhari.”
To ensure a dignified and well-coordinated series of events, President Tinubu has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume. The Committee is charged with the responsibility of organizing all state funeral arrangements in close coordination with the Katsina State Government and the Buhari family.
In addition, 25 members of the Federal Executive Council have been formally directed to travel to Katsina State to participate in the burial rites and remain present in Daura for the Third-Day Islamic prayers, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 17, 2025.#newsafro_
