Sofía Vergara didn’t hold back during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as she opened up about her awards season disappointment. The 52-year-old actress, who portrayed drug queenpin Griselda Blanco in Netflix’s Griselda, admitted she was “raging” after coming away empty-handed despite Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.
Vergara, known for her comedic charm, let her frustration show with a mix of humour and honesty, saying she wasn’t exactly a gracious loser. “I was like, why didn’t I win?” she exclaimed to Fallon, joking that she had even pleaded with Jodie Foster — who won the Golden Globe in her category — to hand over the award. “I begged her! I told her, ‘You’ve won enough, give me one!’” she said, laughing.
Despite the losses, Vergara’s role in Griselda marked a dramatic career shift, earning her critical praise for taking on a gritty, transformative part far removed from her comedic roots. But as she told Fallon, the recognition only went so far: “They nominated me, but then they didn’t give me the damn award!”
Her candid outburst was met with laughs from the audience — and underlined just how seriously she took the role.
During the interview, host Jimmy Fallon opened with a laudatory remark, stating: “Can we talk about how great you are? Last time you were here, we talked about Griselda, and then—bang—you get nominated for a Golden Globe and an Emmy. Congratulations!”
Despite enthusiastic applause from the audience, Ms. Vergara immediately interjected, exclaiming: “And I didn’t win any of it! I didn’t win any of it.”
In an apparent attempt to downplay the disappointment, Mr. Fallon replied, “It doesn’t matter,” to which Ms. Vergara firmly retorted, “It matters,” making her dissatisfaction abundantly clear.
Mr. Fallon continued his efforts to soothe the actress, stating, “It does not mean anything—the nominations, that’s an honour.”
Ms. Vergara, however, expressed her lingering frustration, directing a pointed remark at fellow nominee Jodie Foster: “Jodie Foster took everything.”
Mr. Fallon acknowledged Foster’s talent, remarking, “Jodie Foster is amazing, of course,” to which Ms. Vergara replied, “Yeah, but it doesn’t matter,” maintaining her stance.
During the Golden Globe Awards in January, Ms. Foster was awarded Best Actress in a Limited Series for her portrayal of police chief Liz Danvers in True Detective: Night Country. However, the celebratory moment was briefly disrupted by Ms. Vergara’s humorous protest, as she stood up and approached the stage, exclaiming, “Oh no, give me one!”
Recounting the moment during her appearance, Ms. Vergara confirmed her actions: “I tried, I tried to stop her in the middle of the Golden Globes, but it was too late.”
When Mr. Fallon asked what she had said, she responded, “‘Give it to me.’ She took everything.”#newsafro_
