Meghan Markle has recently faced criticism for her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, which some observers claim bears similarities to existing works. Notably, British children’s author Mel Elliott expressed disappointment upon the announcement of Markle’s scrapped animated series, Pearl, in 2021, suggesting it resembled her own book series. Additionally, Markle’s lifestyle show has been compared to Pamela Anderson’s Cooking with Love, with critics pointing out striking resemblances in visuals, dialogue, and themes, leading to accusations of plagiarism. Furthermore, some have questioned the feminist values portrayed in Markle’s series, labeling it a “tradwife” show and suggesting it contradicts her previously modern and progressive image.
Meghan Markle, credited as Executive Producer alongside David Furnish, saw her Netflix show Pearl canceled less than a year after its announcement, with all references to it swiftly removed from the website of her production company, Archewell.
Now, British children’s author Mel Elliott, 51, from Hastings, has publicly revealed that she sent a legal letter to Markle’s team, suggesting a potential copyright infringement regarding her own creation, Pearl Power—a children’s book series featuring a little British girl. Elliott followed up with two additional personal letters in an attempt to address the issue.
Last night, Mel Elliott expressed her disappointment and confusion over the similarities between Meghan Markle’s proposed Netflix show Pearl and her own Pearl Power series, which she created seven years earlier. Elliott said, “Meghan is a feminist who sticks up for other women, so I was disappointed and confused to see how similar the show was to my own creation.”
She continued, “Of course, I can’t know if anyone on her team had seen it and been inspired by it, but the similarities were too great for me to ignore.”#newsafro_
