The shooting of a film based on the life of legendary Nigerian musician and theatre icon, Duro Ladipo, has officially commenced, according to his son. The film aims to tell the story of the iconic figure, who was renowned for his contributions to the cultural and theatrical landscape of Nigeria, particularly in the realm of traditional music and drama. Ladipo’s son confirmed that the production, which has been highly anticipated, is underway, with a focus on honoring his father’s legacy.
Mr. Wole Duro-Ladipo, the son of the late iconic playwright Duro Ladipo, revealed on Sunday in Ibadan during a courtesy visit to Chief Lekan Alabi, the founding Trustee of the Duro Ladipo Foundation, that the shooting of a film about his father’s life has officially begun.
“The film is expected to hit cinemas in Nigeria and abroad before the end of this year,” he confirmed.
Duro-Ladipo, who resides in Chicago, U.S., assured that all preparations have been made to ensure the success of the film’s production.
Duro-Ladipo passed away on March 11, 1978, following an illness at the University College Hospital in Ibadan.
In response to Duro-Ladipo during the visit, Chief Lekan Alabi, the Maye Olubadan of Ibadanland, extended his congratulations to the late playwright’s successors for their efforts in preserving and promoting his legacy, particularly through the forthcoming film project.
Chief Lekan Alabi reminisced about Duro Ladipo’s most notable play, Oba Koso, which won the first prize at the Commonwealth Film Festival in London in 1965. He expressed that it was an outstanding production at the time and highlighted how exciting it would be to see the film adaptation in cinemas today.#newsafro_
