The Nigeria Conservation Foundation, in collaboration with its partners, recently hosted a delegation from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), in collaboration with its partners, hosted Mr. Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and his delegation during a four-day official visit to Nigeria from March 4 to March 7, 2025.
In a formal statement, the NCF emphasized that the UNFCCC has been instrumental in supporting climate policy development, capacity building, and various climate-related initiatives globally. The statement noted that the maiden visit served as an opportunity to review Nigeria’s progress towards its ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), which primarily aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060 while harnessing the economic benefits of a robust climate action plan.
The visit commenced in Abuja, where Mr. Stiell met with high-ranking government officials and representatives from civil society on March 4 and 5, 2025. During these meetings, the Federal Government reiterated its commitment to climate change mitigation and sustainable development, ensuring that proposed solutions would benefit local communities and protect the environment.
On March 6, 2025, Mr. Stiell traveled to Lagos to participate in a symposium and breakfast meeting at the Lekki Conservation Centre, the headquarters of the NCF. This event, jointly organized by the Lagos State Government, the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat, and the NCF, was part of a broader program that included an art exhibition and symposium under the theme “Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangrove, and Art,” scheduled to run from March 5 to March 18, 2025.#newsafro_
