The mother of Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, former wife of the Ooni of Ife, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians for intervention following her daughter’s detention in connection with a tragic stampede in Ibadan. The incident occurred during a Christmas funfair on December 18, 2024, at Islamic High School in the Bashorun district, resulting in the deaths of 35 children.
In a tearful video, Mrs. Funmilayo Ogunseyi described her daughter as compassionate and dedicated to helping others, emphasizing that the tragedy was unintended. She pleaded for mercy, stating, “She is not a killer; she came to help. Naomi is fragile and sick. President Tinubu, I beg you, come to our aid.”
Naomi Silekunola, along with two others, has been remanded in custody by the Iyaganku Magistrate Court in Ibadan. They face charges of conspiracy, acts of neglect causing harm, and failure to ensure adequate security and medical facilities at the event.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, with many expressing sympathy for Naomi and her family. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has also offered support, acknowledging Naomi’s history of organizing charitable events and encouraging the continuation of such initiatives with improved safety measures.
As investigations continue, the community remains hopeful for a fair resolution and support for the affected families.
