In a recent interview, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo reflected on the extraordinary efforts made by his late wife, Stella Obasanjo, to secure his release from prison. He recalled how, despite the challenges and obstacles in place, she went above and beyond to ensure his freedom. Her persistence and determination played a pivotal role in his eventual release, as she navigated both political and personal hurdles, demonstrating her deep commitment and unwavering support for him during one of the most difficult times in his life.
During the inauguration of the 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin, Edo State, on November 8, 2024, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recalled the pivotal role his late wife, Stella Obasanjo, played in securing his release from prison. He reflected on how she went to great lengths to fight for his freedom when he was imprisoned by the military government of General Sani Abacha in 1995, accused of being involved in a coup plot.
Obasanjo, who spent three years in detention before his eventual release following Abacha’s death and the subsequent intervention of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, praised Stella for her unyielding determination. He noted that her efforts were crucial during his time in prison, and her commitment helped bring about his eventual release. The hospital, named in her honor, stands as a testament to her legacy and the deep impact she had on his life.
Reflecting on his late wife’s dedication, Obasanjo praised Stella for her tireless efforts to secure his release from prison during the harsh regime of General Sani Abacha. Despite facing threats from the military government, Stella was an active campaigner, traveling to international locations such as Vatican City, France, and other parts of the world to garner support for his freedom.
Obasanjo acknowledged her sacrifices, revealing that her relentless pursuit of his release was a driving force in ensuring his survival. He remarked that Stella’s commitment was crucial in ensuring he came out of prison alive. Her efforts not only secured his release but also made a profound impact on their lives. Stella went on to become Nigeria’s first lady after Obasanjo became president in 1999, but tragically passed away in 2005 during her husband’s second term, following complications from liposuction surgery.
