Anne Hegerty, diagnosed with autism at 45, opened up about her struggles with dating. She recalled a time when she unplugged her phone to prevent a boyfriend from contacting her, highlighting her challenges with personal boundaries and communication in relationships.
At The Paul Strank Roofing Charity Gala in Kensington, Anne Hegerty candidly stated that she would make a terrible partner due to her struggles with closeness and sharing her space. She noted that many autistic individuals tend to avoid marriage or long-term commitments.
Anne Hegerty explained that her longest relationship lasted just four months, and she intentionally maneuvered it to ensure it wouldn’t last longer. She expressed a strong need for alone time, stating that she doesn’t even have pets due to her discomfort with sharing space. Despite acknowledging that she could pursue a relationship if she wanted, she emphasized that she genuinely doesn’t seek one.
Anne reflected on her struggles with relationships, sharing that her longest lasted just four months. She admitted to feeling overwhelmed by the demands of closeness and even unplugging her phone to avoid her boyfriend’s daily calls. Eventually, she wrote to end the relationship, expressing a mix of relief and guilt. Anne emphasized her need for space, stating, “I didn’t want to talk to him or anyone!”
