At 8:19 PM, troopers responded to a collision on County Route 551 North in Oldmans Township, Salem County. The incident involved two cyclists, Johnny M. Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew R. Gaudreau, 29, who were traveling north near the fog line of the roadway.
Sean M. Higgins, 43, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee behind a sedan and SUV. Higgins attempted to overtake the slower vehicles by entering the southbound lanes. Upon trying to re-enter the northbound lanes, he collided with the cyclists as he attempted to pass the SUV, which had moved to the center of the roadway to avoid the cyclists.
Both cyclists sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Higgins, suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, has been charged with two counts of death by auto and is currently held at the Salem County Correctional Facility.
