Inside William and Harry’s tense “reunion”: The princes attended their uncle’s funeral in Norfolk together, though discreetly, following the Duke of Sussex’s clandestine return from LA. Locals have shared their observations of the occasion.
Princes William and Harry attended their uncle’s funeral on Wednesday, marking their first meeting this year amidst their ongoing conflict.
Initially, sources close to Harry suggested he would miss the service in Snettisham, Norfolk, for Lord Fellowes due to security concerns in the UK. However, he made a covert trip from LA to attend.
Despite hopes for a potential reconciliation, witnesses noted that the estranged brothers seemed to “keep their distance,” did not engage with each other, and “sat apart at the back of St Mary’s Church after arriving very discreetly.”
Lord Fellowes, who passed away last month, was the husband of Lady Jane Spencer, the sister of Diana, Princess of Wales, and served as the late Queen’s private secretary.
The tense atmosphere at the reunion is likely to have been heightened by the recent announcement from Harry’s publishers about the upcoming release of the paperback edition of his controversial memoir, Spare. This re-issue, scheduled for October, will bring renewed attention to explosive allegations made by Harry against his estranged family, including a claim that Prince William physically attacked him during a heated argument.
There had been speculation about whether Harry would include a new chapter in the paperback edition, reflecting recent developments such as the King’s cancer diagnosis and ongoing family tensions. However, the decision not to add new content might be interpreted by some as an attempt to ease familial discord.
The last occasion the brothers were together was at the King’s Coronation over a year ago, where they were seated separately and not pictured together. Prior to that, their last joint public appearance was at the late Queen’s funeral in 2022.
